Going A Little Pom Pom Crazy

OK, I’ll admit it. I have a pom pom fetish!

I’ll blame it on the European summer I have had this year that spurred on my obsession with these little fluffy balls! I am in love with them, on bags - detailing shoes - on jewellery, everywhere! I had such a fantastic time shopping for them in the past few months I have seriously verged on the side of pom pom crazy. But before I show off my pom pom emblazoned collections, why not just make some! Once you get the hang of making pom poms, they are the easiest of things to make, and they are a perfect little activity to do in front of the TV at night. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be hanging pom poms of everything this Spring.

I have tried making pom poms a few ways, you can buy an actual pom pom maker from Spotlight stores, you can use a cardboard template, and you can even use a fork! My method is pretty basic, and I have had the most success with it. It's simply using a bottle I already had at home, depending on the size you want your finished pom to be, you can vary the size of the object you are wrapping in wool.

How to make a pom pom

All you need to do is wrap, and wrap and wrap! Around and around the yarn goes until you get to a point where you think you can create a hefty sized pom pom!
Once you’ve have wrapped it with enough wool, slide it off very carefully - you want to keep it in its circular shape.

Thread through a 20cm length of wool and tie a knot. This will keep the ball together.
Cut the edge of all the wool in a circular fashion; this will give you a shaggy looking pom pom.
Trim! Give a little haircut to shape it into a perfect circle.

It’s as easy as that! Once you work out the size, you would like your pom poms you can create a whole collection of them and start decorating. I love the idea of bringing some colour to simple objects and pom poms are my go to this season.

Make a few black pom poms that can hang at varying lengths and attach them to the ankle strap of a simple pair of strappy heels
When gift giving, use wool to decorate the package instead of ribbon and attach a few pom pom as the bow
Buy pom poms on cord from a haberdashery store and trim up placemats and serviettes
Sew pom poms onto the front of an old beach hat to bring it back to life
Combine a couple of pom poms together to make a fun key ring
Buy a simple long chain and add pom poms of varying sizes to make your own bespoke necklace
Glue pom poms onto the front of a pair of colourful sandals or thongs
On the corner of your hand towels or beach towel sew large contrasting pom poms on each corner
Glue around the rim of a plain lampshade small pom poms to really make a child's room look fun
