Witchery #whiteshirtcampaign

I can not tell you how very honoured I was to be asked to be a part of this year’s Witchery #whiteshirtcampaign.

A campaign of which 100% of its profits go towards the ever so worthy and much-needed research into Ovarian Cancer by the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Ovarian cancer is responsible for 1 woman dying every 8 hours in Australia. There is no early detection test which sadly means most women are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease. For each shirt sold, Witchery will give 100% of gross profit to the research needed to help find this test which is so desperately needed. For the first time ever, Witchery has teamed up with the incredible Toni Maticevski to design this fantastic shirt. A staple in every woman’s closet, a white shirt is a must-have so if you are thinking about snapping one up - DO IT! They are beautifully designed, beautifully made in a crisp, polished cotton fabrication with a feature fold along the shoulders and sleeves, an elongated buttoned cuff & a shirt-tail hem. You can help support this cause by picking up a shirt of your own right here.

OVARIAN CANCER FACTS

In the last 20 years, Deaths from Ovarian Cancer have increased by 57%. Yet there have been no recent breakthroughs in research or treatment methods.

  • Approximately 1,800 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year – over 70% of these women will already be in the late stages.

  • Only 20-30% of these women will survive more than five years and even after treatment, more than 80% of these women will see the cancer return within two years. In most cases, remission from ovarian cancer is not possible.

  • Unlike breast and cervical cancers, there is no early detection test.

  • Vague symptoms like bloating and fatigue are often confused with other women’s health problems – over 50% of women incorrectly believe ovarian cancer is detected through a pap test.

  • Over the next decade, it is estimated that 14,000 Australian women will die from ovarian cancer.

  • Developing an early detection test for the next generation could save the lives of more than 8,000 Australian women and more than 1.3 million women worldwide, throughout the next 10 years.

WITCHERY’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE OCRF

Over the past 12 years, Witchery - via the OCRF - has been the single largest funder of Ovarian Cancer research in Australia. Witchery’s donations of over 13.8 million to the OCRF have contributed to more than 35 research projects and medical achievements across Australia, Including:

  • The appointment of dozens of specialised research scientists and research assistants.

  • Continuous funding of Andrew Stephens and his project team at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research since 2009.

  • The development of a potential early screening tool, the Active Ratio Test – clinical trials commenced in 2018.

  • The purchasing of equipment including a number of -180°C freezers and two -86°C freezers to store ovarian cancer tissue samples.

  • The purchasing of a Mass Spectrometer – a discovery tool for identifying specific protein profiles in biofluids of ovarian cancer.

  • A Gell Spot Cutter – used to help cut gel spots containing protein for analysis in the Mass Spectrometer.
