A lunch in winter doesn’t have to be fireside…
We often find ourselves retreating indoors to the cozy comfort of our homes in Winter. However, embracing the season's magic can lead to unforgettable experiences, such as a winter lunch on the balcony with friends—plush blankets to keep the chill off our legs and a simple, garden-themed tablescape to dine amongst. We have had some beautiful sunny winter days here in Melbourne, and setting up a simple table on the weekend is a fun way to celebrate with your friends and family.
The choice of dinnerware plays an integral role in any dining experience - whether it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner, my Garden Patch plate collection by Harris Scarfe proves to be the perfect choice for this winter lunch. The delicate, leafy patterns of the plates mimic the winter foliage outside; the plates' simplicity and elegance reflect the season, making the dining experience feel refined yet cozy.

The key to creating a stunning outdoor table with garden props is to let your creativity flow and embrace the natural beauty of your garden. Mix and match different elements to create a unique and enchanting setting for your guests to enjoy. As you can see, I have collected a few garden-themed items to use for this table - a watering can to serve water, bamboo handled cutlery to match back with the baskets scattered throughout the table, use of herbs as a centrepiece, vegetable paper cutouts as napkin details and rustic metal trays as placemats. Small details like this MAKE a table, and I loved getting creative with what we have at home to bring this table to life. Varied sizing of baskets creates interest and adds a wooden texture to the simple stripe tablecloth, making the table a little more casual - perfect for a weekend lunch with friends.
5 Tips on bringing the garden to your table!
Floral or Herb Centerpiece: Use freshly cut flowers or herbs from your garden as a stunning centrepiece. Arrange them in a rustic watering can or a vintage garden basket for a charming touch. You can also incorporate greenery, such as fern fronds or eucalyptus leaves, to add texture and depth to the arrangement.
Herb Pots: Utilize small herb pots as both decor and functional elements. Choose aromatic herbs like basil, mint, or rosemary, and place them in decorative pots along the centre of the table. Your guests can pluck leaves to add a burst of flavour to their dishes.
Garden Lanterns: Hang or place garden-inspired lanterns around the table. Lanterns with intricate metalwork or ones made from terracotta can evoke a sense of an enchanted garden. As the sun sets, these lanterns will glow warmly invitingly over the table.
Garden Tools as Utensil Holders: Repurpose old or vintage garden tools, such as trowels or hand rakes, as holders for utensils like forks, knives, and spoons. Arrange them in a rustic container at the centre of the table for a whimsical touch.
Woven Baskets: Use woven baskets to hold napkins, bread rolls, or fresh fruits. These natural textures will complement the garden theme and add a touch of rustic charm.
