We all sit down to dinner together at least once a week, right?
With differing schedules, after work and after school activities, dinners as a family or as a couple are often an afterthought. Sometimes getting a meal on the table is an effort in itself, so I thought I would share with you something I do to jazz up a dull, weeknight meal. Frivolous it may be, but it always brings a smile to my face - and at the moment, I’ll take those smiles whenever I can get them!
Dark days call for light moments, so let’s dress up the every day to bring that light in! A simple dinner can be jazzed up in so many ways, from table styling to the music you play, so let’s look at ways we can bring joy to the table and connect with our loved ones.
Create a family playlist, including a favourite song of each family member. Music always gets me in a good mood, and hearing a favourite song whilst eating and laughing with daily or friends is magic!
Mix up your china - who cares if nothing matches? Go crazy. Get some colour on that table and live it up! We often have pieces in our collection we save for special dinners, why? Use it. It’s in your possession for a reason, enjoy it!
Bored of eating dinner at the dining table? Make a special picnic on the floor. Once a week we had family picnics when the kids were small, it’s such a relaxed, enjoyable way to eat together. Avoid the trap of eating in front of the TV by creating a picnic in another area of your home.
Add some colour to your table by using the brightest tablecloth you can find! I love raiding the bedlinen closets for some fun, colourful prints that can act as tablecloths. Why not? A simple printed flat sheet can be the most beautiful cloth, large enough to drape off a table. And we all love a multi-use product!
Change up the lights at dinnertime! Switch off that downlight and surround yourself with candles, perhaps collect all the lamps in your home and arrange them in the corner of your room, trail your Christmas lights down the centre of the table for a little glow.
